At the DHU we are investigating novel methods of assessing gingival changes and one means by which this can be achieved in the use of 3D laser scanning.  This method enables the detection of volumetric differences in the gingivae and may help in clinical trials of gingivitis therapies.

The technique employs the use of high definition laser scans of dental casts taken from study subjects.  Using specially designed software it is possible to calculate changes in the profile and volume of the gingivae.

Other potential methods for measuring inflammation are being investigated at the Dental Health Unit in collaboration with partners at the University of Leeds and the Laser Photonics here at the University of Manchester.
